The statistics are astounding—40% of working parents have changed their employment situation since the onset of COVID-19, and in September alone, over 1 million Americans left the workforce, 80% of whom are women. For any company seeking to attract and retain diverse talent, this is a crisis threatening to roll back decades of progress. Working parents need us, and as employers, we need them. Helping working parents take care of their families at home allows them to be focused and engaged at work.

Over the past year, we’ve talked to thousands of parents; hosted discovery roundtable discussions with employers, parents, and clinicians; acquired a parenting app (Bright Parenting); and ultimately put our heads together to build a product that we were excited to officially unveil on HLTH’s virtual stage: our Parenting & Pediatrics product, the first family health solution to integrate support for parents with specialized pediatric care to improve behavioral and clinical outcomes for parents and children.

Why does it matter that the product is integrated? It matters because parents’ health and children’s health are interconnected. When children are healthy and taken care of, parents are healthy and productive. When parents experience stress, it can have a direct impact on physical and mental health outcomes for children. Put simply, our health is connected but our care historically has not been.

With the addition of our Parenting & Pediatrics product, Maven is now supporting parents from the time they’re thinking about starting a family (via Maven Planning) to the time their child is ten years old. Maven has always believed that having a more integrated family health model—that starts with fertility and maternity care, and continues on to help through early childhood—is core to giving families the support they need to be successful at work and at home.

There are three key components to this product:

  1. On-demand specialized family care providers: Access to specialists—particularly for children with special needs that may require specialized care—is limited. For example, only about 20% of children with mental, emotional, or behavioral disorders receive the care they need from a specialized provider. We are filling those gaps in care by offering access to providers ranging from parenting coaches and speech pathologists to special education advocates, occupational therapists, and child care consultants. Members can connect with these providers via video or messaging for free—yes, there is no cost to an employee to meet with these providers. Providers are available 24/7 so parents can connect them when it’s most convenient.
  2. Daily curriculum and recommendations: We’ve worked with clinicians to design a curriculum that helps meet the needs of a range of family health goals. Our behavioral coaching and daily challenges help reinforce parenting skills in a way that is fun, engaging, and effective—ultimately contributing to stronger parent-child relationships. Core to our curriculum is daily bite-sized lessons on a range of topics that are top of mind for parents—from how to make morning routines more fun to how to deal with nightmares, how to talk about racism with your children, and more.
  3. Childcare support: Childcare support is a top concern for parents and their employers during the pandemic, and we know parents still urgently need our support: Maven recently commissioned a survey of 1,000 U.S. parents and found that more than half of working parents do not feel supported by their employers right now as they navigate childcare challenges. Now companies do not have to decide up front which childcare service meets the need of most of their parent population. We've assembled a variety of vetted providers from daycare, to sitters, to virtual care, to pods, to tutoring so that parents can choose what helps their unique situation the most and get reimbursed with Maven Wallet, should you decide to subsidize (coming soon!). Childcare support has always been a part of our vision for our Parenting & Pediatrics product but certainly became a critical need in the context of the pandemic.
