At Maven, innovation is at the core of everything we do. The research of women’s and family health experts powers our industry-leading care model, designed to deliver better outcomes for our members. Maven’s Visiting Scientist program, which invites academic and clinical experts to Maven, represents a key part of our strategy. Through this program, these scientists accelerate Maven’s clinical research roadmap and drive key innovations within our unique care model.

The women’s and family care model is ripe for innovation

The U.S. has the highest maternal mortality and morbidity rates in the developed world, and the costs to raise and grow a family are rising each year. Prenatal standards of care haven’t been updated since the 1930s, and traditional health benefits don’t account for deeply entrenched health inequities that disproportionately affect historically marginalized communities. The care model is ripe for innovation—and the health and wellness of women and families depend on it.

Maven’s Visiting Scientist program

The Visiting Scientist program invites academic and clinical experts to cross-functionally collaborate with Maven’s clinical team to work on high-priority research projects and bring additional rigor to our care design.

Meet our past and current Visiting Scientists

Current: Dr. Constance Guille
Maven is welcoming a new clinician innovator, Dr. Constance Guille, Professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences and Obstetrics and Gynecology at the Medical University of South Carolina, as our second Visiting Scientist. In this role, Dr. Guille brings her expertise as a reproductive psychiatrist to help advance Maven’s clinical research roadmap and provide strategic input on care model design, with a focus on mental health.

“Having seen the devastating effects of unrecognized and untreated maternal mental health disorders, I believe there is a tremendous need and promise for using digital health to integrate patient-centered maternal behavioral health treatment into routine prenatal care,” said Dr. Guille. “I am excited to share my insights with Maven to further advance the company's maternal mental health care model.”

Past: Dr. Alex Peahl
Dr. Alex Peahl
, MD, MSc was Maven’s first Visiting Scientist. Dr. Peahl is an Assistant Professor and physician-investigator in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of Michigan and a nationally recognized expert on prenatal care redesign and innovation. Dr. Peahl has led some of the most influential research on redesigning prenatal care, including a recent study of the impact of COVID-19 on the evolution of prenatal care delivery guidelines in the United States.

“I have found that right-sizing prenatal care is critical to improving the effectiveness, efficiency, and equity of prenatal care for all patients, particularly for those facing the greatest barriers to care. As a Visiting Scientist, I shared my insights with Maven and collaborated with its clinical team to further advance the company's care model, designing and studying new high-value, patient-centered approaches to maternity care delivery,” said Dr. Peahl.

Future Visiting Scientists

Maven is currently searching for our next Visiting Scientist to take a leadership role in bringing a scientific approach to understanding the potential of digital health for women and families and providing strategic input into Maven’s care design.

Priority research areas for 2024 are fertility and menopause, including their intersection with health disparities and social determinants of health. Across all topics, emphasis will be placed on understanding the mechanisms by which a virtual platform impacts members’ experiences and outcomes and to generate insights that are relevant for both Maven and more broadly in care models.

Visiting scientists have the opportunity to develop their own research agenda relevant to Maven and to work on projects that are part of the existing research agenda. They will work with Maven part-time for up to one year and receive funding from Maven to protect their academic time.
